Cal, born in Elk Point, Alberta, to John McFadden Ferguson and Peggy Wright Ferguson, was the eighth of nine children (6 girls and 3 boys). He grew up on the family farm, attending Canadian  Junior College to get his High School equivalency and then taking some college classes as well. While there he met his first wife, Joan and married at the age of 27. Four sons were born to Cal and Joan.

In 1965, Joan was diagnosed with cancer, which she survived with lots of prayer and several surgeries. Tragicall, in 1972, their second son, Brian, was killed in a motorcycle accident and in 1982, Joan passed away during heart surgery.

As life continued, sadly, but with God's constant watchcare, Cal met Ellen Danielson of Gaston, Oregon and they were married in May 1984.

Cal and Ellen traveled on 19 Maranatha projects over the years; the last to Honduras in 2011.

Cal was pre-deceased by his parents, all 6 sisters, 1 brother, his son Brian, and his first wife, Joan.
