Lents Rejoices

By Carol Specht, April 12, 2019

Young Adults Host International Fair, Lents Activity Center Receives Grant

Adventist Youth (AY) meets every Sabbath after a potluck at Lents Church in Portland, Ore. Attendees to AY, young and old, planned an International Fair led by Amefil Booth. On Dec. 22, 2018, the Lents Activity Center in Portland, Ore., looked festive with light strings and international flag streamers, themed tablecloths, and flag centerpieces. Colorful, national dress impressed the guests. Attendees brought potluck dishes from their home country.

Young adults Quiana A. Caluya and D.J. Villaester hosted the evening program. A geographic game tested our knowledge of various countries. Children struck a piñata that wasn’t easy to break open, so three adult sisters successfully stuck it vigorously. Other entertainment included Christian and Adrian Flores singing a traditional Mexican song and a string group playing a Philippine mandolin, Philippine bandurias and guitars. The event was advertised on Eventbrite, an Internet service which allows users to browse, create and promote local events, which did bring visitors.

Another cause for rejoicing came with news that a grant for Lents Activity Center (LAC) improvements had been approved. Sabina Urdis, Lents Neighborhood Association (LNA) chair, brought this news to us one Sabbath morning. The LNA, which meets monthly in the LAC, applied for the grant. This will improve and increase security for this community meeting place. We thank the Lord for the long-standing cooperative relationship we continue to have with the Lents Neighborhood Association.
