Northwest Communicators Excel

By Anthony White, October 24, 2019

Northwest communication students and professionals received national recognition at the annual Society of Adventist Communicators convention in Albuquerque, N.M., on Oct. 17–19, 2019. Awards were received for communication excellence in print, graphic design, media production, podcasting and marketing.

The highlight of the award ceremony was the moment when Steve Vistaunet, retiring North Pacific Union Conference (NPUC) Gleaner editor and communication director, was invited on stage. Steve was awarded the Society of Adventist Communicators Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedication to communication excellence and leadership through the years. His commitment to the Seventh-day Adventist mission continues to point people to the Savior in engaging ways.

In addition to Steve, another NPUC communication member was recognized. Nina Vallado, NPUC communication intern, received the Best in Class award for her Filling the Gap podcast.

"It is an honor to work among such an accomplished group of communication professionals who love and support the mission of our church," said Jay Wintermeyer, incoming NPUC Gleaner editor and communication director. "Furthermore, it is a joy to see our students from Walla Walla University excelling in their chosen fields as well."

Walla Walla University departments and students took home five awards for print design, graphic design, social media interaction, podcasting and marketing campaign communications.

The Gleaner is a gathering place with news and inspiration for Seventh-day Adventist members and friends throughout the northwestern United States. It is an important communication channel for the North Pacific Union Conference — the regional church support headquarters for Adventist ministry throughout Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. The original printed Gleaner was first published in 1906, and has since expanded to a full magazine with a monthly circulation of more than 40,000. Through its extended online and social media presence, the Gleaner also provides valuable content and connections for interested individuals around the world.
