Jesus presided over the very first wedding in the garden and told Adam and Eve that, with their marriage, they were now one and what He had joined together no one should break apart (Gen. 2:21–24, Matt. 19:4–6). The Bible often uses the marriage motif as a description of our relationship with God — a relationship founded on God’s love for us and, in turn, our love for Him (Rev. 9:7 and 21:2, John 17:20–22, Eph. 5:25–32).
Eight years ago, Kerry and Sabrina Santana stood in the Hamilton Seventh-day Adventist Church and said, “I do.” They had attended an evangelistic series at the church and made the decision to follow Jesus. With that decision they were married and then baptized. Both the marriage and baptism they realized were commitments that were lifelong.
After eight years and some stressful times, the Santanas wanted to recommit their love and to one another and their relationship to God. So on June 6, 2020, during the church service they were remarried. As soon as they said, “I do,” they had communion together as the first thing they did in their renewal and vows.
They wanted God to be the center of their renewed relationship. To make the service a sacred event for the entire congregation, all in church that morning were invited to renew their vow with their spouse and recommit their relationship with Jesus as the center of their marriage and, for those who were single, to renew their relationship with Jesus and to realize that in Jesus we are all family.
