Former Gleaner Managing Editor Dower Passes Away

Nadine Dower, former Gleaner managing editor from 2003–2008, passed away on Jan. 5, 2024 in Seattle, Washington, a day short of her 80th birthday. Born on Jan. 6, 1944 in Spokane, Washington, Nadine had a significant impact on Adventist communication outreach efforts throughout her career.

Nadine, along with her husband Richard (Dick), who served as the editor during the same time frame, formed an indispensable team that played a crucial role in the success of the Gleaner magazine. The couple reached the shores of retirement in 2008 after dedicating five years to providing Northwest Adventist members with a consistently stellar Gleaner.

Known for their travels across the Northwest, the Dowers captured stories that connected readers to the essence of being about their Father's business. Dick's passion for relationships and Nadine's meticulous attention to detail created a dynamic duo that left an indelible mark on Adventist communication.

Nadine played a vital role in developing and maintaining communication partnerships throughout North America. Her work promoted the mission of various Adventist ministries while strengthening the potential of every union paper. She created a "National Buy" advertising program to make it easier for ministries, churches and schools to advertise in union magazines. Her influence in denominational advertising remains.

Her rich professional journey also included time spent at the Review and Herald Publishing Association, the music department and University Press at Andrews University and seven years at Lake Union. Nadine also owned her own design business for 10 years. Her dedication to service extended beyond the workplace, volunteering for Your Story Hour and engaging in various ministries throughout her career.

The Dowers' commitment to building relationships and mentoring young communicators earned them the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Society of Adventist Communicators Convention in October 2007.

Her great laugh, love for making tasty apple pies and collaborative spirit with Dick in gifting homemade pies to friends are just a few examples of the warmth and dedication she brought to her work and personal life.

Her legacy of attention to detail, commitment to Adventist communication and the joy she brought to those around her will be remembered and cherished by many.

"Pick any spot in North America and you will likely find someone who has gone to school with Dick and Nadine or who has been mentored by them over the years. Their network of friends and admirers testifies to their commitment to building lifelong relationships," reflected Steve Vistaunet, retired Gleaner editor. "In an era of selfishness, Dick and Nadine have modeled an esprit de corps that exemplifies independence of thought but unity of action. As a team, they have created a living legacy, a commitment to the Lord's cause that will continue to inspire many of us for years to come."

"I found Nadine to be approachable, encouraging and helpful in the early days of my career," said Heidi Baumgartner, current Gleaner editor. "She valued people and nurtured them through genuine mentorship and friendship. She had a profound dedication to helping others succeed and showcasing God's love for the world."

In reflecting on Nadine's life, another colleague, Desiree Lockwood, former Gleaner advertising and production manager, mentioned, "Nadine helped teach me that paying attention to the details in a magazine is important because if I don’t find the mistake, someone else will."

Nadine is survived by her husband of 59 years, Richard (Dick); daughter, Mona Dower Sarcona, and her spouse, Joe; son, James and his spouse, Noel Chavez; and three grandchildren.

Nadine Dower's memorial service will be held on March 16, 2024, at Walla Walla University Church in College Place, Washington. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to FoundationONE, supporting Upper Columbia Academy.

The Adventist community mourns the loss of a dedicated and influential communicator, and her legacy will continue to inspire for years to come.
