Otis Honored for 56 Years of Pathfinder Service

By Cara Otis, November 26, 2025

On Oct. 11, 2025, Roseburg Adventist Church was filled with pride, applause and a few joyful tears as the congregation gathered to honor Robert Otis for an astounding 56 years of service to the Pathfinder program.

The ceremony was a heartfelt tribute to a man whose dedication, kindness and quiet strength have left a lasting imprint on generations of young people. The sanctuary filled with the familiar sounds of Pathfinder tradition as the Roseburg Pathfinder Club — fully dressed in their Class-A uniforms — marched down the aisle, led by Caleb Otis, boys' counselor and co-deputy director, and Tom Watson, Mount Mazama district coordinator.

A Legacy of Leadership Without Yelling

Jeff Coleman, Roseburg Church pastor, called Otis forward and reflected on his leadership style. He shared he had experienced directors who led by yelling, but Otis was a breath of fresh air, leading instead with love, consistency and a calm smile.

In true Otis fashion, he took the microphone with humor, reminiscing about his own Pathfinder days and the way the program shaped his life. Laughter rippled across the crowd as he shared memories that spanned decades — his wit and wisdom proving just as timeless as his dedication.

Celebrating Behind-The-Scenes Heroes

Carolyn Otis, his devoted wife, was also honored during the ceremony. “Behind every successful director is a supportive spouse,” Coleman noted. “And Carolyn has been just that — and more — for so many years.”

Honors and Highlights

Watson presented the coveted 56-year pin, recognizing the service milestone. “Otis was serving in Pathfinders 11 years before I was even born,” Watson joked. “It’s more than just a club. It’s a place where kids know they are seen, valued and part of something meaningful.”

Meet the New Director: Cara Otis

Coleman introduced the next Pathfinder director. “While Otis remains active in the club, he has requested a transition in leadership," shared Coleman. "Earlier this year, Otis nominated his daughter-in-law, Cara Otis, to step into the role of director for the Roseburg Pathfinder Club.”

When the club reopened after 2020, the club had eight Pathfinders join. Today, there are 21 Pathfinders in the club. Historically, there were 65 Pathfinders in the club back in the 1980s. The growth of the Pathfinder club continues to receive ongoing support from Roseburg Church through volunteers, financial donations and room supplies. “Thank you for your donations — whether it is monetary, items or your time — because that’s what makes this club go ’round," Cara said.

The Torch is Passed, but the Flame Burns On

Although the torch of directorship has been passed, Otis made it clear: he’s not done yet. He remains deeply involved as the club’s drill instructor — mentoring, instructing and shaping the next generation of leaders.

As the program continues to grow under Cara’s leadership, one thing is certain: The seeds Otis planted more than five decades ago continue to flourish today.
