On a smoky day in September, the Roundup Seventh-day Adventist Church gathered to do their volunteer duty for the Montana Department of Transportation and its Adopt a Highway program.
We do this twice a year. It is a fun event and also one we take seriously. Every time it’s an adventure and a contest to see what interesting artifacts can be found.
This year’s finds included three tie-down straps, a bungee cord with a bent hook, a document with tax informoation and a Social Security number, a washer, tire shreds, blown treads, and, because we are in a pandemic, at least five face masks.
Multiple bags of trash were collected, and our stretch of road is now clean again — until tomorrow.
After the cleaning, we all met at the Harris farm nearby for a potluck meal outside and a church meeting, also outside. It was wonderful to sit in nature, which is also nice since COVID-19 seems to be still with us.
As we sat eating and talking under a spreading crab apple tree, the birds, which are in abundance at the farm and in said crab apple tree, took turns throwing those crab apples at us. The tree in the yard was full of ripe fruit. The birds had fun. We laughed. It was a little taste of heaven.
