Hope, a Vaccine Against Fear

By Marco Larumbe, June 15, 2021

Roberto and his family all had been infected. Roberto was extremely ill and the family asked me to annoint him. I prayed and prepared myself. I felt like David in all Saul's armor facing Goliath, only in this case the giant’s name was COVID-19.

Arriving at the hospital, I was directed to Roberto's room. He lay in bed, intubated without hope of survival, surrounded by his wife and children.

According to the doctors that night would be his last. But even so, faith and hope invaded that room. The family held hands, said nice things and apologized to each other. They didn't want to leave anything unsaid. Time passed, and after words of hope we prayed and said our goodbyes, That moment was very emotional but I left, confident that God was going to do His will in the life of this family.

A few days passed and I called to ask about this family. The family happily told me that Roberto had been disconnected from the respirator and he was breathing and eating by himself. The doctor’s only explanation was that a miracle had occurred. Days passed and good news kept coming. Roberto had been discharged to continue his recovery at home.

In the weeks that passed, he and his entire family were present every Saturday at church. It was a joy to see them determined to follow Jesus and determined to give their lives to Him through baptism.

From that moment, on we began to make the preparations for this occasion. We carried out an evangelistic series called “Hope, a Vaccine Against Fear,” with guest speaker, Edgar Sanchez. At the end of the week, Roberto, his wife and three of their children gave their lives to Christ. I praise God for all this and I give glory to His name because despite the pandemic, we can say the Lord has helped us every step of the way. His word will continue to be scattered like autumn leaves.
